The electrical energy supply chain globally is undergoing a radical transformation, driven on one hand by the challenges of climate change associated with anthropogenic activities, natural disasters, and energy security, and on the other by major innovations in technology. This transformation can be seen in the changing power generation portfolios and wholesale electricity market structures, as well as the rapid rise of renewable resources?mainly wind and solar. In Europe, these changes are driven by the overarching European Union target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% below 1990 levels, to improve energy efficiency by 20%, and to increase the proportion of final energy consumption from renewable sources by 20%, all by 2020. This is the so-called ?20?20?20 by 2020 target.? A key and necessary enabler for this transformation in the electrical energy supply chain is innovation and radical changes in policy, social, and corporate acceptance, technological advancements and a revamp of so?called ?liberalized? electricity market structures. This presentation will discuss these ?enablers? and look far beyond 2020 with an eye to deliver massive carbon reductions by 2050, ultimately identifying some of the possible pathways to achieving the panacea of a totally carbon-neutral society.

What happened to the offenses?

We?re 10 days into the 2012 postseason and the American League finalists can?t hit, the Nationals League contenders can?t get any starting pitching and none of the teams still playing seem to be any better than the ones that were eliminated.

Here are the hitting lines of the four teams still standing:

Detroit: .258/.299/.351, 3 HR, 20 RBI in 248 AB
New York: .205/.277/.326, 6 HR, 20 RBI in 258 AB

St. Louis: .249/.342/.438, 9 HR, 40 RBI in 233 AB
San Fran: .196/.270/.332, 5 HR, 20 RBI in 199 AB

If these were actual regular-season player lines, the Cardinals would be a fringe regular as a corner outfielder and the other three would be riding the pine. The Yankees have scored fewer runs in their seven games than the NLDS-losing Reds did in five games.

The AL contenders have combined for 198 hits and 239 strikeouts so far. Obviously, that?s not the norm. In the regular season, AL teams had 20 hits for every 17 strikeouts. In the postseason, it?s been 20 hits for every 24 strikeouts.

Overall, AL hitters are batting .218 and slugging .310 this postseason. To put that in perspective, Justin Verlander limited major league hitters to a .217 average and a .306 slugging percentage this season. So, essentially, every AL pitcher this month is Justin Verlander.

The NL, on the other hand, hasn?t had it so bad for offense. Not early in games anyway. What is odd is just how bad the starters are getting roughed up, especially with four of the league?s top five rotations represented. Going by ERA, the Nationals had the NL?s best rotation this year, followed by the Dodgers, Cardinals, Reds and Giants. And yet?

Cardinals starters: 2-2, 4.22 ERA
Reds starters: 1-2, 4.30 ERA
Nationals starters: 0-2, 5.25 ERA
Giants starters: 1-3, 6.49 ERA

Outside of Washington?s, the bullpens have been far more effective, which is fortunate since they?ve so often needed to cover five innings per game. The Cards? bullpen has a 1.80 ERA in 30 innings. The Giants are at 2.51 ERA in 28 2/3 innings.

So, what are we left with 10 days in? The AL?s best offensive team has a .650 OPS, a mark that would have rated the worst in the major leagues this season. NL starting pitchers are 4-8 with a 4.92 ERA, which is a worse ERA than every NL team besides the Rockies posted this year. And for all of the exciting games, it?s hard to argue that we?ve actually seen a great caliber of play from any of these teams this month. While there have been thrills and chills, it hasn?t exactly been a showcase.

LinkedIn branches out with new blogging and 'following' features for select group

LinkedIn branches out with new blogging and 'following' features for select group

LinkedIn has always been based on the notion of "connections" rather than "followers," but the social network has made a bit of a break with that tradition today. For the first time, it will let users follow people they aren't connected to, although their choice of people is initially limited to a group of 150 individuals that LinkedIn deems to be "thought leaders." What's more, the company is also giving them access to some more advanced blogging tools that will let them publish longer posts with pictures and videos. Of course, while it's fairly limited in scope now, LinkedIn is clear that this is only their first step in this direction. It says it will continue to expand its group of "influencers" over the next few months (it's taking suggestions), and LinkedIn's Dan Roth told TechCrunch that "eventually we want to allow all people to follow each others." In the meantime, you can get the full rundown of what's in store at the links below.

Syria pushes world refugee total towards record: U.N.

GENEVA (Reuters) - With tens of thousands fleeing Syria every month, the number of refugees worldwide in 2012 is set to be the highest this century, a senior United Nations official said on Monday.

Antonio Guterres, the body's High Commissioner for Refugees, told his UNHCR agency's executive committee that its ability to cope was being stretched to the limit.

"Already in 2011, as crisis after crisis unfolded, more than 800,000 people crossed borders in search of refuge -- an average of more than 2,000 refugees every day," the former Portuguese prime minister said.

That total had been the highest since the turn of the century "and so far this year more than 700,000 people have fled from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Sudan and Syria", Guterres said.

Last Friday, another UNHCR official said the total from Syria could reach 700,000 this year, nearly four times its earlier estimate as government troops battle rebels across the country.

About 294,000 refugees fleeing 18 months of fighting have already crossed into Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Turkey, or await registration there, Panos Moumtzis told a news briefing.

He said 100,000 people had fled Syria in August, 60,000 in September and at the moment 2,000 or 3,000 were crossing daily into neighbouring countries.

The new refugees are joining some 42 million around the globe who have fled across borders to escape violence. Many of these have been in temporary shelter provided by the UNHCR for a decade or more, some for even longer.

Amid the global economic crisis and with budgets of governments stretched, Guterres told the executive committee that the cost of helping refugees was escalating fast while long-lasting crises like Afghanistan and Somalia continued.

"We are at a moment when the demands on us are rising while the means available to respond have remained at a similar level to last year," he said.

"Our operations in Africa, in particular, are dramatically underfunded. At this moment, we have no room for unforeseen needs, no reserves available. In today's unpredictable operating environment, this is a cause for deep concern."

Kalyn's Kitchen: Recipe for Sriracha-Spiced Stir-Fried Tofu with ...

Since today is World Vegetarian Day as well as being Meatless Monday, it does seem fitting that I'm sharing a recipe that has tofu, don't you think?? I know this Sriracha-Spiced Stir-Fried Tofu with Eggplant, Red Bell Pepper, and Thai Basil has two strikes against it for some of you with tofu and eggplant on the ingredients list, but trust me when I say it was so delicious that it tasted like it came from a restaurant.? I'm not a vegetarian and probably never will be, but I do love all types of vegetables, and I really enjoy tofu when it's firm and cooked well-done so it's slightly chewy.? Jake and I made this several times to get the sauce ingredients and the timing just right, and if you're never cooked tofu (or eggplant) I bet you'll love this if you give it a try.
Some people might argue this recipe isn't vegetarian because we used fish sauce in the cooking sauce.? If you're vegan, or just don't want to use fish sauce, good Asian markets have a vegetarian fish sauce replacement, or you can make your own vegan fish sauce.?? But even easier, just replace the fish sauce with more soy sauce and the flavor will still be great.? (You can find more meatless recipes by using the label Meatless Monday or checking Vegetarian Recipes in the recipe index, and I'm also doing a meatless slow cooker recipe each Monday on Slow Cooker from Scratch.? For more Meatless Monday ideas from other bloggers, check Meatless Monday at BlogHer, where I write a weekly post spotlighting one of the fabulous meatless recipe ideas I find around the web.)
Put the tofu in a colander and let it drain for at least 10 minutes. Then press the tofu between two layers of paper towel to press out even more of the water.

Cut the pressed tofu into pieces that are just over an inch square.? (Dont' cut them too small or they are hard to keep turned when the tofu is browning.)

I used smallish Ichiban Japanese eggplant from my garden, which are perfect for stir-fries. Cut the eggplant into slightly diagonal slices about an inch thick. Cut the red bell pepper into long thin strips.

Thai basil is optional, but it adds a lot of flavor.? Pull the basil leaves off the stems and wash in the salad spinner.

Mix together the soy sauce, fish sauce (or more soy sauce), lime juice, sweetener of your choice, and Sriracha to make the cooking sauce.

Heat the wok, then heat the oil, then add the garlic cloves and stir-fry just until they are fragrant.? Then discard the garlic.? This is called "seasoning the oil."

Add the tofu cubes to the seasoned oil and cook over medium-high heat, turning the tofu several times, until all the pieces are well-browned.?

It took about 8-10 minutes to get all the tofu browned and we used tongs to turn the pieces of tofu.? Remove tofu to a plate while you cook the vegetables.

Add another tablespoon of oil as needed, then add the eggplant and stir-fry four minutes.? When it's starting to soften and brown add the red pepper strips and cook about 2 minutes more.

Then add the tofu back to the wok, add the sauce, and cook 2-3 minutes, turning often, until all the tofu and vegetables are coated with sauce.

Add the Thai basil and/or sliced green onions and cook about one minute more.? Serve hot. Sriracha-Spiced Stir-Fried Tofu with Eggplant, Red Bell Pepper, and Thai Basil
(Makes 4-6 servings; recipe created by Kalyn.)

Ingredients:
14 oz. firm or extra firm tofu
2 T + 1 T peanut oil (or any high smoke-point oil)
6-8 whole garlic cloves
6 thin Asian eggplants, cut into 1 inch slices
1 red bell pepper, cut into thin strips
1/2 cup thinly sliced green onion
3/4 cup Thai basil leaves (optional, but good)

Sauce Ingredients:
2 1/2 T soy sauce
1 1/2 T fish sauce (I like Three Crabs Fish Sauce; for vegan version use soy sauce instead or make your own vegan fish sauce.)
1 T fresh-squeezed lime juice
1 T Stevia In the Raw Granulated Sweetener, Splenda, or Sugar (use Stevia or Splenda for South Beach Diet)
1-2 T Sriracha Rooster Sauce (1 tablespoon was fairly spicy so only use 2 tablespoons if you really want it hot)

Instructions:

Put tofu pieces in a colander placed in the sink and let them drain at least 10 minutes.? While tofu drains, cut eggplant into slightly-diagonal slices about 1 inch thick, cut the red bell pepper into thin strips, thinly slice green onion, and wash Thai basil leaves (if using.)? Mix sauce ingredients.

When the tofu has drained, put a double layer of paper towels on a cutting board, lay the tofu pieces on the paper towel, and put another double layer of paper towels on top of the tofu.? Press down with the palm of your hand to press water out of the tofu so it's absorbed by the towels.? Discard towels and cut tofu into squares slightly over 1 inch square.? (Don't make them too small.)

Heat the dry wok over high heat for about one minute, add 2 tablespoons of the oil and heat one minutes more, then add the garlic cloves and cook just until they are fragrant, about 30-45 seconds.? (Don't let the garlic brown.)? Remove garlic and discard. ?

Add the tofu cubes, laying each on one of the larger sides so the tofu is in a single layer.? Cook over medium-high heat, turning often, until the tofu is well-browned on all sides.? (Pay close attention to keep the tofu turned so it doesn't burn.? We use a pair of long-handled tongs for this.)? Remove browned tofu to a plate while you cook the vegetables.

Add the other tablespoon of oil and heat for about a minute, then add the eggplant slices and stir-fry about 4 minutes, or just until the eggplant is just starting to soften and brown.? Add red pepper strips and stir-fry about 2 minutes more.? Add the browned tofu pieces back into the wok and cook for 1 minute to be sure the tofu is hot.

Add the sauce to the wok and cook the mixture for 2-3 minutes, stirring often so all the pieces of tofu and the vegetables get well-glazed with the sauce.? Add the sliced green onions and Thai basil (if using) and cook about 1 minute more.? Serve hot.

This will keep overnight in the fridge and can be reheated in the microwave, but it's best when it's freshly made.

South Beach Suggestions:
As long as you use Stevia or Splenda to sweeten the sauce, all ingredients in this dish would be approved for any phase of the South Beach Diet.? Tofu is recommended for only 1/2 cup serving size for Phase One, so use portion control if you're eating this for Phase One.?

Nutritional Information?
I chose the South Beach Diet to manage my weight partly so I wouldn't have to count calories, carbs, points, or fat grams, but if you want nutritional information for a recipe, I recommend entering the recipe into Calorie Count, which will calculate it for you.?

Agricultural Inventions from 1862: A Look Back in Scientific American 's Archives [Slide Show]

Cover Image: October 2012 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

As the young United States expanded, inventions became one of the cornerstones of progress. Inventors could come from any class of people, including many who worked long and hard in the dominant industry of 1862, agriculture

From our comfortable viewpoint in 2012, the United States of 1862 sounds wretchedly backward: Most of the population lived and labored in rural areas. Water and sewer services were almost nonexistent. Small children worked in coal mines. Life expectancy was a miserable 44 years (34 years for slaves). Civil War dominated the news.

Yet three-quarters of the population could read (for instance, such fine publications as Scientific American). Service and manufacturing businesses were growing rapidly. Thousands of miles of railways and telegraph wires crisscrossed the country, moving people, goods, news and ideas. The ideals of learning and progress were enshrined in the U.S. Constitution: ?to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts.?

Inventions were a cornerstone of Progress. Any device that could save labor or improve some process or product could bring fortune and even fame to the successful inventor. Agriculture had its share of hopeful farmer/inventors, as the following slide show of agricultural improvements from 1862 attests.
