Twitter gives user info to US 69 percent of time

9 hrs.

Twitter says it turns over user data to government agencies in the U.S. in 69 percent of the requests made for such information, according to a new transparency report released by the microblogging site.

"It's our continued hope that providing greater insights into this information helps in at least two ways: first, to raise public awareness about these invasive requests; second, to enable policy makers to make more informed decisions," writes Jeremy Kessel,?Twitter's manager of legal policy, on the site's blog Monday.?

Last year, 81 percent "of all information requests we received worldwide originated from the U.S.," Kessel said.

In 2012 in the U.S.,?there were 815 "user information requests" about 1,145 Twitter?user accounts, and for 69 percent of those requests "some or all information" was given to the agencies. The majority of the "requests" ? 60 percent ? were subpoenas, 19 percent were search warrants and 11 percent were court orders for the information.

Another 10 percent are requests are from law enforcement agencies that aren't in any of the categories above, but might be "exigent?emergency disclosure requests?and other requests received for user information without valid legal process,"?Twitter?says?in?its?transparency?report.

When?Twitter?gets?such?requests,?it?notifies?affected?users?about?them,?"unless?we're?prohibited?by?law."

And?when?requests?for?information?are?not?complied?with,?it's?because?Twitter?"may?seek?to?narrow?requests?that?are?overly?broad,"?or?fail?to?identify?a?Twitter?account.?"In?other?cases,?users?may?have?challenged?the?requests?after?we've?notified?them."

(You can see here how the U.S. stacks up against other countries when it comes to requests for Twitter user information, but no other country even comes close.)

Google, which has been doing transparency reports longer than Twitter, is comparable in terms of the user data turned over to government agencies, about 66 percent, as of Dec. 31, 2012.

This is Twitter's second transparency report. Its first was issued last July, and at that time, Kessel wrote, "We've received more government requests in the first half of 2012 ...?than in the entirety of?2011."

Twitter also shared the number of requests to take-down tweets that allegedly violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. There were 3,268 such requests in 2012; Twitter complied in 53 percent of the cases:

Twitter says that it "may not comply with with every request" for several reasons, including "takedown notices that fail to provide sufficient information for us to locate material on Twitter."?

The site also gets a "large number of misfiled, non-copyright complaints" through its?Web form.

"Over the course of 2012, we saw a steady increase in government requests (with a slight decline in copyright takedown notices)," Twitter said in its report, which should serve as a warning of sorts?to those using the social media site. "All signs suggest that these government inquiries will continue to climb into the foreseeable future."

Pentagon to boost cybersecurity force

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon plans to assign significantly more personnel in coming years to counter increasing threats against U.S. government computer networks and conduct offensive operations against foreign foes, a U.S. defense official said on Sunday.

The plan, which would increase both military and civilian staffing at U.S. Cyber Command, comes as the Pentagon moves toward elevating the new command and putting it on the same level as the major combatant commands.

The official said no formal decisions had been made on the expanding staffing levels or changing Cyber Command into a "unified" command like U.S. Strategic Command, which currently oversees cyber command and the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal.

Any changes to the combatant command structure would be made based on strategic and operational needs, and take into account the need for efficient use of taxpayer dollars, said the official, who was not authorized to speak publicly.

The Pentagon was working closely with U.S. Cyber Command and the major military commands to develop "the optimum force structure for successfully operating in cyberspace," the official said.

The Washington Post, quoting senior defense officials, reported late Sunday that the Pentagon had decided to expand Cyber Command's current staffing level of 900 to 4,900 in coming years.

The official confirmed that Cyber Command planned to expand its force significantly, but said the specific numbers cited by the Post were "pre-decisional."

The newspaper said senior Pentagon officials had agreed to increase the force late last year amid a string of attacks, including one that wiped out more than 30,000 computers at a Saudi Arabian state oil company. it said

The plan calls for creating three types of force under the Cyber Command, said the defense official.

"National mission forces," would protect computer systems that undergird electrical grids and other kinds of infrastructure. "Combat mission forces," would help commanders abroad execute attacks or other offensive operations, while "cyber protection forces," would focus on protecting the Defense Department's own systems.

Details were still being worked out, the official said.

PFT: Lovie Smith plans to sit out 2013 season

tim-brownGetty Images

We agree wholeheartedly with the opinions expressed by Peter King in his latest Monday Morning Quarterback and elsewhere regarding the merit (or more accurately lack thereof) of former Raiders receiver Tim Brown?s non-allegation allegation that former Raiders coach Bill Callahan ?sabotaged? a 10-year-old Super Bowl.? But some questions remain as the latest Super Bowl week commences.

First, will 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh be asked about the situation at one of his many media availabilities this week?? Harbaugh, who was a first-year offensive assistant with the Raiders in 2002, wasn?t asked about it on Sunday night when the team arrived.? And given the extent to which the story has faded in recent days, he may not be asked about it at all.

Second, did the Raiders? game plan change two days before the game?? Brown?s ludicrous opinion of sabotage comes from his belief, as a factual matter, that Callahan changed the game plan.? So did he?? There has been no definitive answer provided to that question.

Third, did the Raiders fail to change audibles and line calls?? It has been presumed for nearly a decade that the Raiders didn?t account for the fact that former Oakland coach Jon Gruden knew the code words that would be used at the line of scrimmage on offense.? But Peter King?s dismantling of the sabotage theory in the latest Monday Morning Quarterback extends to the notion that the Bucs knew what the Raiders were planning to do.? The game broadcast, however, contained strong evidence to the contrary.

Tampa Bay safety John Lynch wore a microphone, and he plainly can be heard telling former Bucs defensive backs coach Mike Tomlin after the Raiders fell behind 20-3 late in the first half, ?Mike, every play they?ve run, we ran in practice.? It?s unreal.?

Said Tomlin, ?I know.?

Whatever the reason, the Buccaneers? dominance was enough, we?re told, to prompt Raiders receiver Jerry Rice to rip the microphone he was wearing during the game from his pads and flush it down a toilet at halftime.

Fourth, given that King believes Brown?s assertion is ?utterly preposterous? and that King is one of the voters for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, will this mess keep Brown out for another year?? The voters will swear that they don?t consider anything other than what happens on the field, in accordance with the Hall of Fame?s bylaws.? But as we explained in our one-time-and-one-time-only PFT season preview magazine (which apparently made a cameo appearance several months ago in an episode of Mike & Molly on CBS), the human beings who cast the votes are influenced by the things that tend to influence the decisions made by human beings.

If it?s a close call between Brown and someone else as a given voter makes the excruciating descent from 15 modern-era finalists to up to five modern-era enshrinees, Brown?s assertions could be viewed, consciously or otherwise, as reflecting the kind of disrespect for and misunderstanding of the game that could be the factor pushing that person one way or the other.

There would be no hard proof of it, and none of the voters will risk their vote by proclaiming publicly that they sabotaged Brown?s candidacy in part because of his claim of sabotage.? But it definitely could, in a close case, be a factor ? and we?d never know that it was.

Fake Amazon Page Is Best Online Resume Ever

We don't actually know if Philippe Dubost is any good at his job. But boy, can he throw together a resume.

Dubost, a web product manager currently based in Paris, is looking to travel for his next position. So he decided to make his CV stand out anywhere in the world -- by mimicking an Amazon product page.

[More from Mashable: Amazon?s Latest Kindles Finally Come to Canada]

The result, "Philippe's Amaz'ing Resume," is a pitch-perfect pastiche. Suggesting that you add the applicant to your shopping cart to see his price is such a clever way of asking to be hired, we're amazed no one thought of it before. Especially when followed by the urgent reminder: "only 1 left in stock. Order soon!"

You can see the full resume here. But in case Dubost's site has been overwhelmed by traffic -- he's already had to change his web hosting service once, according to his Twitter feed -- here's another screenshot.

[More from Mashable: Amazon Woos Advertisers With What It Knows About Consumers]

Dubost has taken pains to replicate every last aspect of an Amazon page -- even inserting an ad. We've seen resumes that look like Facebook pages and Twitter feeds before, but none have this much attention to detail.

And given the fact that hiring is a transaction, making it look like the world's largest store makes a ton of sense.

Would you hire an applicant based on a resume like this? Let us know in the comments, and check out our galleries of other unusual CV designs below.

Personal branding: Expert says you'll be left behind in business if ...

BEAVERTON -- A veteran business strategist will talk about personal branding in a presentation co-hosted by the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce and the Korean Chamber of Commerce.

Karen Kang, author of "BrandingPays: The Five-Step System to Reinvent Your Personal Brand," believes people who don't market themselves will be left behind in a constantly changing economy.

Kang presents her ideas as a cooking metaphor, urging clients to "bake the cake, then ice it" as they market themselves for a new job or promotion. In her telling, the "cake" is a person's rational value, and the icing is their emotional value. Combined, they make for a strong personal brand that can accelerate career success.

In a news release, Kang is quoted as saying people should consider themselves a "free agent."

"No one else is looking out for your best interests but yourself," she says in the news release. "You need to be crystal clear about who you are and the value you bring to a world where constant change is the only norm."

The event happens Thursday, Jan. 31, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Beaverton City Hall, 4755 S.W. Griffith Drive. It's open to the public.

Innovation Excellence | How Dreamworks, LinkedIn & Google ...

The traditional perception of intrapreneurship being the domain of a few ?exclusive? individuals is being replaced by the recognition that a pervasive ?intrapreneurial culture?, centered on the customer experience and driven by entrepreneurial values, is key to sustained innovation and competitive advantage. Some organizations, including the likes of Dell and Google, have formalized the role of the intrapreneur through official positions such as the ?Entrepreneur In Residence? (EIR) or ?Chief Innovation Officer?, whilst others have sought to ?buy-in? intrapreneurs by acquiring start-ups with an entrepreneur in situ. Yet in this age of corporate austerity and intensified competitive threat, businesses need to create and foster intrapreneurial values and behavior across the whole organization if they are to stimulate widespread innovation, increase efficiencies and remain competitive. Defined intrapreneur roles can certainly act as catalysts, however intrapreneurship should be embedded in the overall culture of the business: adopted, accepted and celebrated as core practice and directed towards the organizational goals. Companies must therefore become versed in the methods and practices for activating and developing intrapreneurship if they are to meet the demands of today?s brave new world:

1. Look For It
Building an intrapreneurial culture isn?t about ?creating? intrapreneurs; invariably they already exist within the organization, they just need to be discovered, nurtured and loved! By identifying and understanding existing intrapreneurs, their endeavors can be encouraged and appropriately supported to enable them to flourish. Where the company doesn?t recognize intrapreneurs they are more likely to become disenfranchised as their natural efforts are undermined and quashed, further having a resonant disruptive impact on the wider team. Intrapreneurs don?t fall into a single profile; moreover a diverse mix of individuals exhibiting a range of intrapreneurial attributes, skills and personalities is optimal to drive innovation and value-generation across the business. Leaders must accept and not fear diversity, as it is a key stimulant of ideas; they should therefore look to assemble and unleash a diverse workforce if they are to maximize the intrapreneurial opportunity. By actively seeking and being seen to encourage intrapreneurship, by giving intrapreneurs the room to explore their full potential and range of interests, the company will build it?s brand in the talent market, giving an edge over it?s competition in being able to attract and recruit the most sought after individuals. It is important that as the organization recruits new talent, it proactively seeks people with intrapreneurial traits who will complement and augment the incumbent team.

2. Be Transparent
Company vision, goals and strategy are not the purview of a mere few. Owners and leaders must be transparent and candid with their teams if they are to stimulate and develop intrapreneurship, not just in providing a future direction, but also the realities of the now. Intrapreneurs are not renegades; they do not act as subversives to the organizational collective good. Intrapreneurial endeavors should always be conducted in the best interests and congruent with the overarching vision and strategies of the parent business. As such, intrapreneurs need to see the big picture if they are to bring new thinking and value that is aligned to the organization?s needs and goals. Their initiatives will be more relevant and productive if they have visibility and understanding of the wider context, as well as having greater scope to merge and align their ideas with others. Intrapreneurs, as employees, feel more empowered if they know where they?re going and why they?re going there.

3. Be Inclusive
Make people feel integrated and part of the company, no matter what their job is. Give them a sense of value and togetherness so that they are motivated to work for the best of the business and not just their own self-interests. Intrapreneurship is a win-win; it advances both the needs and success of the individual and the organization. If the intrapreneur is dis-enfranchised, there is a risk that they will take their ideas, equity and value-generated outside as either an entrepreneur or possibly a competitor. An intrapreneurial culture builds value across the workforce which is predicated upon giving people a voice in their own work. They need to feel empowered such that they have the scope to be able to contribute and make change.

4. Give People Ownership
To create an intrapreneurial culture, people must be empowered to make decisions ? empowered to have ownership. In this respect, employees need to be encouraged to create solutions independently of the chain of command. This breads a fluid environment of rapid ideation and activity where individuals and teams are prepared to form views and make judgments, which ultimately create value for the business. The success of any venture is the summation of the decisions and thinking that contribute to it, whether from top down or the minute-by-minute decisions that go into all employees performing their tasks. In today?s knowledge economy, companies that foster independent thinking will better serve customers, build additional value and gain competitive advantage. Intrapreneurs are contributors.

5. Make Risk-Taking and Failure Acceptable
As intrapreneurs make decisions, they must be willing to take intelligent risks and, although fully prepared to be held accountable, not fear persecution or ridicule if they fail. Risk-taking and consequently failure are necessary components of progress that need to be accepted, understood and embraced by the organization. Failure is an important part of the innovation process, a signpost on a journey indicating which way not to turn (at that particular point in time). Organizations should therefore tolerate some failure and accept calculated risk taking. Not all ideas will produce successful new products, create more efficient ways of doing things, or lead to a strategic advantage. But all ideas can be a step towards each of these, either forwards, backwards, or pivoting to the side. In all failure there is success in producing a result; it may not be the result intended or desired, but it provides a learning experience allowing change to be made in order to generate a new outcome. Intrapreneurs must be prepared to take action on a daily basis in order to reach their desired goals; they need to be allowed to learn from every experience in order to progress. It is the responsibility of leaders and managers to develop a culture of learning from failure that moves on to the next, more informed attempt?otherwise known as experimentation.

6. Create a Learning Culture
Knowledge fuels and underpins innovation. It allows possibilities to be seen and explored; it informs and guides direction by providing context, insight and understanding which in turn lead to new thinking, ideas and solutions. In most cases, once people leave school or college proactive learning becomes sporadic at best. A core trait of highly successful individuals however is they have an un-quenching thirst for learning and personal development; they seek knowledge and insights in all their forms and actively pursue opportunities to augment. Not only is this through reading books, texts, articles or interviews in their given discipline; attending events, workshops or seminars; or searching and exploring content online, but also through interactions with others ? everyday meetings and conversations, or time spent with individuals who can specifically build their understanding, i.e. people who?ve been there and done it before. This form of absorptive education is crucial for the development of intrapreneurs. Companies must imbue values of endless self-improvement, knowledge seeking and development through the definition, articulation and ongoing experience of their core values as a means of instilling these principles across the workforce.

7. Train Employees on Creating and Selling Innovation
One famously innovative company, Dreamworks Animations ? the studio behind groundbreaking movie franchises including Shrek, Madagascar and Kung-Fu Panda ? values and encourages creativity from all its employees, even support staff such as accountants and lawyers. According to Dan Satterthwaite, Head of Human Resources, they actively solicit ideas and regularly receive hundreds from staff across the business. Regardless of their defined roles, Dreamworks employees are specifically trained on how to pitch their ideas successfully, whether it involves creative input for a new movie or a food choice for the cafeteria. According to Satterthwaite: ?The work that we do is so collaborative that we must have people who can not only sit at their desk and solve a problem, but then be able to articulate that solution to their supervisor and to the team.? All employees also have access to courses such as artist development, giving them the skills, knowledge and aptitudes that have enabled Dreamworks to repeatedly come up with the next blockbuster animated movie. This inclusive, high engagement culture has consequently led Dreamworks to consistently gain high employee satisfaction rankings as a great place to work. As Satterwaite puts it: ?We challenge all our employees to be their own CEOs.?[i]

8. Support People With Ideas
Allowing and asking for workers to pitch their ideas is a core element in developing an ?open innovation?, intrapreneurially-led culture. Employees have their fingers on the pulse of the customer and marketplace, and hence are best positioned to spot new trends and see opportunities early. They should therefore be encouraged to contribute to the innovation dialogue of the business. Companies may not only solicit general ideas, but also ask employees how they envision solving specific problems, or to provide suggestions about new strategies and tools before they?re implemented. It?s important for the organization not to solely rely on formal, structured communications channels to gather and transmit ideas around the business. In order to gain widespread participation, ad hoc and informal channels should also be adopted ? idea boxes, email addresses, intranet sites and wikis are all tools for accumulating input. The majority of ideas generated through such channels are likely to be limited to incremental innovations, i.e. doing things the way they always have been but better, rather than real break-through, new direction innovation. Incremental innovation can drive rapid revenue growth and cost savings, but is unlikely to provide new business streams or strategic competitive advantage. For the latter, these programs must be deployed in unison with wider intrapreneurship agendas and the intrapreneurs supported to see their ideas through to fruition. When a solution is developed, the business must assist the intrapreneur on the ground by providing expert and executive-level resources and advice in order to increase the chances of success and reduce time from idea to execution.

9. Offer Room to Play Around
A practiced method for promoting intrapreneurship is to give individuals allocated time away from their ?day jobs? in order to encourage their creative processes and support them in the development of new ideas and initiatives. This has generally taken two forms: internal one-hit ?hackathons?, and providing ongoing ?flex time? or ?tinker time? to experiment with new ideas and side projects. These schemes provide employees with the room to play around outside of the mental confines and stresses of their prescribed roles. The concept has become increasingly popular across innovation-led companies, notably within the tech space, including the likes of Hewlett-Packard, Apple and Google where their ?20 Percent Time? has famously given birth to products including Gmail, Google Earth, and Gmail Labs. Set aside innovation time allows individuals and teams scope outside of their daily responsibilities to scout for and test different ideas and approaches, which creates intrapreneurial value without diminishing or distracting from the ongoing function and development of the core business. One of the challenges with ?20 Percent Time? is that it can be unfocused and lacking output; to counter this, LinkedIn launched their ?InCubator? program in December 2012, essentially operating as an internal ?startup? incubator. Engineers can get 30 to 90 days away from their regular work to develop ideas of their own into products; the program is highly structured with rounds of judging, including a final round with founder Reid Hoffman and CEO Jeff Weiner, to filter ideas and extract the most viable and potentially profitable new products. [ii]

Clearworks - Customers, Connections, Clarity

10. Create a Safe Place for Innovation
Removing short-term pressure for immediate returns and taking a longer-term view on innovation is critical to giving intrapreneurial ventures the space to develop and succeed. Basing management decisions on a long-term philosophy, even at the expense of short-term financial goals is the first principle of ?The Toyota Way?, the tenets that have guided Toyota over generations to become the world?s second largest car manufacturer (Forbes Global 2000 2012 [iii]) and one of the most innovative companies around. The revolutionary Prius hybrid electric model took nearly 5 years and an estimated $1 billion to develop, without any real understanding or sense of the market opportunity, simply a vision that hybrids were the cars of the future [iv]. It has gone on to sell over 2.6 million cars worldwide [v]. The need to meet short-term defined goals or deliver immediate financial results limits the ability for the intrapreneur to experiment and push boundaries; it restricts decision making by placing confining barriers on solutions. That?s not to say that intrapreneurs should be left unfettered, but added value will increase exponentially as a culture of innovation and continuous, ongoing improvement is developed over time.

11. Celebrate and Reward Intrapreneurial Behaviour
Celebrate intrapreneurial successes and the people behind them ? whether individuals or teams, it?s important to give credit where it?s due. Recognition and reward will act as significant affirmations for the intrapreneur and provide them with reasons to stay, continue to add value and to grow their contributions in the future. Financial incentives such as profit sharing on ideas will reward for the risk, time and effort put into making the endeavor a success but equally, if not more significant will be playing to the psychology of the intrapreneur through public acknowledgement and endorsement. Recognizing intrapreneurs and calling them out sends other employees a powerful signal that innovation and activation are assets greatly valued by the company. Intrapreneurs also need to see prospects for career advancement within the organization as a key motivation for embarking on and pursuing their endeavor. If they don?t, they?re liable to move externally taking their ideas and the value that they?ve accumulated with them. Clearly the organization has some protection rights in terms of intellectual property, but the business will lose a vital resource and innovative force. Each organization must consider its own culture and values to determine the mix of incentives that will have the greatest impact.

12. Encourage Cross-Discipline Projects and Collaboration
A great misconception of intrapreneurship is that it is an individual sport. For any intrapreneurial venture to succeed, collaboration is key to stimulate and refine innovation and to execute efficiently and effectively. Companies therefore need to proactively create, encourage and facilitate ongoing collaboration between individuals and teams. The only rule that 3M places on their 15% of innovation time for each employee is that they must share their insights with others. Collaboration brings people and resources together to generate a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts, through a collective approach. It improves problem solving by combining experiences to short cut the learning curve as to what works and what doesn?t, eliminating time and resource requirements. Individually our knowledge is limited, it is only by working together that we can extend this to gain a fuller comprehension of the situation and identify possible scenarios or solutions, leading to more thought-through and consequently robust and effective outcomes. Collaboration also facilitates ownership; by contributing to the conception and development of an idea, the collaborators are more empowered and committed to make sure that it actually happens and succeeds.

13. Encourage Networking and Knowledge Sharing
Just as direct collaboration with others is key to fostering intrapreneurship, creating and maintaining a network of active relationships with external and, critically internal ?influencers? and ?connectors? is essential to building awareness, advocacy and momentum for intrapreneurial initiatives. Influencers are those people in the business who, whilst not directly being empowered to make specific decisions, hold knowledge and opinions that are recognized, valued and sought by those that are. Connectors are quite simply the individuals who connect ideas, resources and people within a business; they act as facilitators and conduits for intrapreneurs to both attract and seek out the necessary support to be able to progress their projects. They may or may not be power holders per se, but critically they have the necessary knowledge and relationships to make things happen: they know who to talk to on issues, who the decision makers are, where there are ?pots? of resources, who knows who, and what the key components are for projects to get sanctioned. In both cases, building exposure to these groups for the company?s intrapreneurs will create the necessary environment for new concepts to be identified, supported, developed, approved and ultimately succeed. Companies need to seed, encourage and promote networking horizontally and vertically, internally and externally, in order to maximize these informal systems so that intrapreneurship can thrive.

14. Focus on How to Better Serve Customers
By placing the customer at the beginning, middle and end of all decision-making, the intrapreneur creates the context and stimulus to generate, refine and execute ideas and thinking that are more likely to succeed. Creativity in of itself is irrelevant if it is not viewed through the lens of the ultimate consumer, be that a piece of art, a product, or an idea. Creativity does not, and cannot exist in a vacuum. The ?value? of an idea is only derived when it is active, i.e. when it is creating something new and better from the perspective of a customer experience (whether an internal or external customer). For something to ultimately be better, the consumer has to see, feel and believe that it is in fact better. Creativity in action equates to innovation.

15. Be Sensitive to External Changes
Creating an organizational ?nervous system? that is sensitive to external changes allows the business to innovate faster. Intrapreneurs need to think and react at speed if they?re going to stay ahead of emerging trends and opportunities given the constant flux of today?s markets and ever increasing competition. The organization therefore needs to provide its intrapreneurs with the intelligence to move quickly. Part of this is creating an internal and external data framework that drives consumable and actionable insights. However pure data alone is never enough; intelligence should always be augmented by a network of human gatherers who actively gain insights through building networks and contacts in the market. In this respect, it?s important to consider how this intelligence is consolidated and disseminated across the business. In most cases, highly valuable knowledge is usually retained and guarded by individuals or teams without sharing; only by pooling this will the organization empower its intrapreneurs to create value and drive competitive advantage.

16. Shorten the ?Yes Chain?
One of the biggest challenges for any intrapreneur or intrapreneurial venture is to navigate the idea or initiative through the maize of corporate decision making to get to the ultimate sources of power that can actually sanction the project or provide allocation of resources. As organizations grow in scale and complexity the ?yes chain? becomes more complex and layered, making it time consuming and draining to reach the necessary conclusions. More often than not, the idea will never make it to the final ?yes?. Key to Steve Jobs turning around the fortunes of Apple when he returned in 1997 was walking into the Design Team?s workshop and seeing the array of prototypes on the shelves, exclaiming: ?My God, what have we got here??[vi]. Under the previous regime the vast majority, if any, of these concepts would never have been seen by the ultimate decision makers; yet this was the birth of the stream of ideas that led to the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad. By shortening or circumventing the ?yes chain?, companies can be more reactive to opportunities; drive innovation by activating a constant stream of ideas; and create a broad intrapreneurial culture leading to more engaged and empowered employees.

17. Create and Allocate a Funding Pot for Intrapreneurial Initiatives
One of the biggest hurdles for intrapreneurial ventures is the inability to secure the necessary resources, at the right time, in order to move the project forward. By carving out a funding pool specifically to be used to seed intrapreneurs, companies can enable greater traction for new ideas and thus increase the likelihood of creating new, sustainable business streams. In this respect, the business should act and apply the same principles and rigor as any investor would in the case of an entrepreneurial venture. Intrapreneurs must pitch their ideas and supporting business plans in order to access funding, and be held accountable throughout the development process. That said, the rule of ?creating a safe place for innovation? applies ? don?t rush for immediate results by putting intrapreneurs under undue pressure to make quick returns; the greater opportunity for the parent business is to play a longer game to realise continuous value over time. It is important for all employees to understand the processes and criteria by which any funding is allocated so that they can align their pitches accordingly and that there is transparency and understanding when applicants are unsuccessful. This is a small investment for potentially significant gain, not only in terms of greater efficiencies, new revenue streams or developing competitive advantages, but in the wider benefits of fostering an intrapreneurial culture revolving around a more engaged, motivated and loyal workforce.

Intrapreneurship, alongside entrepreneurship, must be the solution to solving the enormity of the current global economic crisis. For companies to not only survive this environment but to be able to thrive, they need to proactively look to create and foster intrapreneurship and build an intrapreneurial culture across all employees. As Richard Branson puts it: ?Perhaps the greatest thing about this form of enabled intrapreneurship is that often everyone becomes so immersed in what they?re doing that they feel like they own their companies. They don?t feel like employees working for someone else, they feel much more like ? well, I think the only word to describe it is ?belongers.? [vii]

Numark Orbit wireless MIDI DJ controller hands-on (video)

Numark Orbit wireless MIDI DJ controller hands-on

NAMM is yet to open its doors fully, but we managed to sneak a hands-on with the freshly announced Orbit DJ controller from Numark at the press preview. As you can see, the wireless device looks like a game controller that crashed into a disco -- it's certainly distinctive. This is no accident, and the design is purposely built with quick and easy button access in mind, letting DJs (and any MIDI-based performers) step out from behind the DJ booth, and onto the stage. The portability of the Orbit is further amplified by the inclusion of a clip-mount on the rear, as well as lanyard-style strap hoops. It feels light yet solid, and the soft-touch finish means your hands won't get tired gripping this thing in the throws of a drum-pad solo. The name Orbit also evidently refers -- at least in part -- to the near-symmetrical design which lets you hold it either way with the same comfortable access to those brightly-lit, colorful controls. Those pads feel smooth, yet tactile -- and most importantly -- responsive. Tap past the break for more impressions.

That central dial you see in the middle is designed to be used as a multi-purpose knob, and is big enough for you to comfortably thumb it, while still reaching the side controls. There are four buttons which can be assigned as "virtual rotaries," and once selected, spin that wheel to modulate whatever you have it assigned to (filters, reverb amount etc.). The other set of four buttons let you expand those 16 pads out to a potential 64, so if you want one bank for controlling lights, one for sample triggering, and another for hot-cues, you can do this all from the one small device. It's not just the external controls that make this interesting, the internal two-axis accelerometer, which can be assigned to parameters of choice, will definitely add a new dimension to what's possible. Sadly we weren't able to try this out, but already we're thinking of some interesting uses. There's a micro-USB port on one side for charging and tethered use. We only had a short amount of time with the Orbit, but already we could see its potential for enhancing performance. It's not meant to replace anything in your existing set-up, rather to enhance it, and given the flexibility of MIDI, this could mean a whole host of interesting uses. The crowd of folk waiting to get a closer look behind us certainly showed that it's piquing people's interest. Set to be released in spring for a reasonable $100, this looks like a promising start to 2013 for Numark. Check the video tour below for more.

(AP Photo/The Enquirer, Patrick Reddy, File) NO SALES

(AP) ? A gossip website operator defended himself Wednesday against a defamation lawsuit by arguing that a former Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader featured in posts on the site is a public figure.

Hooman Karamian, who goes by the name Nik Richie, testified in a northern Kentucky courtroom that cheerleader Sarah Jones was on national television and participated in community events because of the high-profile job. Public figures trying to prove defamation have a higher burden than people who aren't in the public eye.

Richie, 33, also said his Scottsdale, Ariz.-based website, thedirty.com, is similar to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in the way it features user content. Richie has said the two posts cited in Jones' lawsuit included text and photos submitted by people who knew her.

"My position is freedom of speech, and people are entitled to their own opinion," Richie testified. "This is America."

Jones, a onetime teacher who pleaded guilty to having sex with her 17-year-old former student, is suing Richie and the website over two posts in 2009 that were unrelated to her relationship with the teen.

Her attorney, Eric Deters, is arguing that the posts tarnished her reputation as a teacher and Bengals cheerleader before she ever had a relationship with the teen, causing her severe emotional distress.

Jones, 27, testified Wednesday before Richie took the stand that the posts were devastating.

In the first post in October 2009, Jones is pictured smiling for the camera with a former kicker for the Bengals. The caption says she had sex with every member of the team.

The second showed her in a bikini from one of the Bengals calendars. It claimed that her ex-husband contracted chlamydia and gonorrhea after cheating on her with more than 50 women, and that he likely gave it to her.

Richie, who lives in Orange County, Calif., with his wife and 1-year-old daughter, said in an interview last week that the comments came from someone who knew Jones and had access to photos she posted on Facebook. He said the only thing he wrote about Jones was in the second post, saying, "Why are all high school teachers freaks in the sacks?"

"As a teacher with those things on the Internet, that I slept with all the Bengals and had two STDs, I didn't want to face my students," Jones said Wednesday, adding that she had to tell all her classes that the posts were untrue.

Under questioning from Richie's attorney, Jones testified that she kept both jobs after the posts and that no one who knew her believed they were true.

Richie's attorney, Alexis Mattingly, showed jurors glossy calendar photos of Jones wearing bikinis and reminded them that Jones lied to police, her family and her bosses about her relationship with the teenager.

She also read the jurors text messages between Jones and the teen and transcripts of her interviews with police, all in an effort to attack her credibility and character.

Jones has said repeatedly that she has only had sex with two people, her former husband and the teenager.

Jones pleaded guilty in October to having sex with the teen under an agreement that let her avoid jail time. The two are still together.

Jones resigned from Dixie Heights High School and from the Bengals cheer squad in late 2011 after four years in both jobs. Deters said at the time that Jones had done nothing wrong but stepped down because of rumors about her relationship with the teen.

Testimony in the defamation trial is expected to wrap up Thursday and will include footage of Richie from an appearance on "The Dr. Phil Show. The jury could reach a verdict as early as the afternoon.

Pavlov's rats? Rodents trained to link rewards to visual cues

Jan. 23, 2013 ? In experiments on rats outfitted with tiny goggles, scientists say they have learned that the brain's initial vision processing center not only relays visual stimuli, but also can "learn" time intervals and create specifically timed expectations of future rewards. The research, by a team at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, sheds new light on learning and memory-making, the investigators say, and could help explain why people with Alzheimer's disease have trouble remembering recent events.

Results of the study, in the journal Neuron, suggest that connections within nerve cell networks in the vision-processing center can be strengthened by the neurochemical acetylcholine (ACh), which the brain is thought to secrete after a reward is received. Only nerve cell networks recently stimulated by a flash of light delivered through the goggles are affected by ACh, which in turn allows those nerve networks to associate the visual cue with the reward. Because brain structures are highly conserved in mammals, the findings likely have parallels in humans, they say.

"We've discovered that nerve cells in this part of the brain, the primary visual cortex, seem to be able to develop molecular memories, helping us understand how animals learn to predict rewarding outcomes," says Marshall Hussain Shuler, Ph.D., assistant professor of neuroscience at the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

To maximize survival, an animal's brain has to remember what cues precede a positive or negative event, allowing the animal to alter its behavior to increase rewards and decrease mishaps. In the Hopkins-MIT study, the researchers sought clarity about how the brain links visual information to more complex information about time and reward.

The presiding theory, Hussain Shuler says, assumed that this connection was made in areas devoted to "high-level" processing, like the frontal cortex, which is known to be important for learning and memory. The primary visual cortex seemed to simply receive information from the eyes and "re-piece" the visual world together before presenting it to decision-making parts of the brain.

To monitor the vision-reward connection process, the team fitted rats with special goggles that let researchers flash a light before either their left or right eye. Thirsty rats with goggles were given access to a water spout inside a testing chamber. When they approached the water spout, a brief visual cue was presented to one eye.

If light was sent to the left eye, the water spout would have to be licked a few times before water came to the rat; if light was sent to the right eye, the rat would have to lick many more times before water came. After a few daily sessions of such "conditioning" (not unlike Pavlov's famous dog-bell-reward experiments), the rats learned how long they would have to lick before getting a water reward. If they didn't get the reward in the expected amount of time, they would give up and leave the spout.

Monitoring the pattern of electrical signals given off by individual nerve cells in the rat brains, the researchers found that the signals' "spikes" weren't just reflecting the visual cue alone. Rather, the signals seemed to relay the time of expected reward delivery through altered spiking patterns. They also saw that many nerve cells seemed to report one or the other visual cue-reward interval, but not both. In cells stimulated by a flash to the left eye, the electrical signal returned to its baseline after a short delay, in sync with the timing of the water reward; a cue to the right eye correlated with a longer delay, also in sync with the reward. According to the researchers, the amount of time that passed before nerve cells returned to their resting state was the brain's way of setting up a "timed expectation."

Knowing that the basal forebrain is implicated in learning, the researchers wanted to know if their observations could be explained by nerves from the basal forebrain delivering ACh to the vision-processing center. To remove those nerve cells from the equation, they paired a neurotoxin with a "homing device" that targets only ACh-releasing neurons coming from the basal forebrain. They then repeated their experiments in trained rats that received the neurotoxin and in those that didn't, and found that the nerve cell signals continued to relay the old time intervals, suggesting that ACh and the basal forebrain weren't needed to express previously learned time information.

The researchers next used those same rats to ask if ACh is necessary for nerve cells to learn new time delays. To do that, they switched the visual cues so that a flash in the left eye meant a long delay and one in the right eye meant a short one. Vision-processing nerve cells in the rats in which ACh delivery was left intact adapted their signals to the new associations; but those in the rats that no longer received ACh continued to relay the old associations, suggesting that ACh is necessary to make new associations but not to express old ones.

Hussain Shuler explains, "When a reward is received, ACh is sent throughout the brain and reinforces only those nerve cell connections that were recently active. The process of conditioning continues to strengthen these nerve connections, giving rise to a timed expectation of reward in the brain."

According to Hussain Shuler, studies have shown that Alzheimer's patients have low levels of ACh and have trouble forming new memories. Though medication may elevate ACh, alleviation of symptoms is limited. "Our research explains that limitation," he says. "Therapeutically, we predict that the problem isn't just low levels of ACh -- the timing of ACh delivery is key."

Dell's stock soared nearly 13 percent Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, on a report that the struggling personal computer maker is in talks to take the company private. (AP Photo/Paul Sakuma, File)

(AP) ? Microsoft has joined the negotiations to buy struggling computer maker Dell, according to media reports.

Both CNBC and The Wall Street Journal reported that Microsoft Corp. may invest some of the money needed to take Dell Inc. private after 25 years as a publicly traded company. Tuesday's stories cited unidentified people familiar with the negotiations.

If Microsoft joins in a Dell buyout, CNBC and the Journal say the software maker would contribute $1 billion to $3 billion. That amount would make Microsoft Corp. a minority investor in a complex deal expected to cost $23 billion to $27 billion if it's completed.

Microsoft declined to comment on the reports.

Word that Dell Inc. is interested in selling to a group led by buyout firm Silver Lake Partners first surfaced last week. Dell's stock price has climbed about 20 percent since then. The stock rose 33 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $13.17 in Tuesday's early afternoon.

Dell, which is based in Round Rock, Texas, hasn't said whether it's interested in selling. Going private, though, would enable the company to overhaul its operations without having to meet Wall Street's demands for higher quarterly earnings.

Dell, the second largest U.S. computer maker behind Hewlett-Packard Co., is one of Microsoft's biggest partners. Among other things, Microsoft licenses its Windows operating system to Dell's personal computer makers.

Like many other PC makers, Dell's revenue has been sliding as the popularity of smartphones and tablet computers divert consumer and business spending from laptop and desktop machines.

By becoming a part-owner in Dell, Microsoft would risk being viewed by HP and other PC makers as more of a rival than a partner. Microsoft already has rankled some of its PC makers by releasing a tablet computer called Surface that competes against their products.

So far, though, there has been little evidence indicating that the Surface is reshaping the market for computing devices.

Sony to sell new Xperia tablet in Japan: Nikkei

(Reuters) - Sony Corp's Sony Mobile Communications Inc said it will sell the new version of its Xperia tablet in Japan this spring, the Nikkei reported, citing Kyodo News.

The Xperia Tablet Z, whose price has not been announced, has a 10.1-inch display, is 6.9 mm thin and weighs 495 grams, according to the company's website.

Rival Google Inc's Nexus 10 tablet is 8.9 mm thick, while Apple Inc's iPad mini measures 7.9 mm.

Sony halted sales of Xperia in October, a month after launch, after discovering gaps between the screen and the case that made some of the machines susceptible to water damage.

The Nikkei reported on Sunday that Japanese smartphone makers seem to be regaining some market share they lost to companies like Apple and Samsung Electronics Co.

Small slide in US house sales pushes stocks lower

PARIS (AP) ? An unexpected slump in U.S. home sales data pushed world markets lower Tuesday as investors also digested an underwhelming Japanese stimulus program and a slew of poor earnings from American companies.

Even surprisingly good results from a German investor confidence survey couldn't cheer markets for long.

The day began with the Bank of Japan's announcement that it will set a 2 percent inflation target and implement open-ended bond purchases that will pump money into the financial system. Many found the bank's new program did not live up to expectations.

In Europe, the DAX in Germany slid 0.68 percent to close at 7,696 Tuesday, while France's CAC-40 fell 0.59 percent to 3,741. The FTSE index of leading British shares ended the day barely changed, down 0.03 percent at 6,179. The euro also barely moved; down 0.02 percent to $1.330.

"'Please, sir, I want more,' said Oliver Twist, fed up with a diet of thin gruel. Such is the market's response to news in Japan," said Kit Juckes, an analyst with Societe Generale.

He said investors were disappointed that the inflation target has no fixed time limit, that bond purchases are skewed to the shorter maturities and that they will not start soon.

The day was also heavy with American companies reporting their results, many of which were disappointing. But it was an unexpected slide of 1 percent in U.S. home sales in December ? the first drop since September ? that sealed the downward trend.

Wall Street was up slightly after being closed Monday for a holiday. The Dow Jones Industrial average was trading up 0.25 percent higher at 13,683, while the broader Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 0.14 percent to 1,487.9.

Jennifer Lee, an economist with BMO Capital Markets, predicted the disappointment would be short-lived.

"A disappointing U.S. housing report but nothing to get worked up over," she wrote in a note to clients. "The growing economy and improving job market will continue to support the housing sector."

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index finished the day down 0.4 percent at 10,709.93 after volatile trading on the back of the central bank's announcement. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose marginally to 4,779.10. Hong Kong's Hang Seng reversed morning losses to rise 0.3 percent to 23,658.99.

Mainland Chinese shares fell. The Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.6 percent to 2,315.14. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index lost 1.4 percent to 928.90.

South Korea's Kospi rose 0.5 percent to 1,996.52 after Finance Minister Bahk Jae-wan said the country will help exporters struggling with the rise of the won, Yonhap News Agency said.

The remarks come amid worries that monetary stimulus moves by the U.S. and Japan could result in the further appreciation of the Korean currency.

Benchmark oil contract for February delivery was up 61 cents to $96.64 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The Lolly beginners' guide to investing in gold - The Lolly from ...

I visited the Albert Memorial, with its golden statue of Prince Albert, to talk about how demand for gold as a defence against inflation and as an alternative currency has been behind the soaring price of the precious metal.

This is the latest in The Lolly Investor Programme, a weekly series of videos explaining the basics of investment to beginners.

Hello, welcome to the Lolly Investment Programme beginners' guide to gold!

I've come to the Albert Memorial, which commemorates Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria who died in 1861.

This London landmark was made more striking by the decision in the 1990s to gild it in gold leaf.

I want to talk about gold because returns from the precious metal have easily beaten the returns from shares, bonds and property this century.

It?s a curious type of investment though, quite unlike those other asset classes, but plays an increasingly important part in investors' savings.

When I began this series a year ago I explained how income was a big driver of a lot of investment.

With interest rates stuck at an all-time low, investors' search for income has underlined the truth of an age-old rule.

This is that assets like shares, bonds and property are largely priced according to the income they yield, or are expected to produce.

Gold is the exception to that rule. There is no income to be had from a precious metal! Gold doesn't pay a dividend, interest or rent.

    So what does it do?

The fact is gold doesn?t do a lot, but that?s its appeal.

Gold is widely used in electronics because of its conductive properties, but its main use has always been making jewellery and gold coins ? and filling a few teeth!

And that?s because from ancient times until now gold has been associated with wealth.

But the bling factor isn't what excites investors.

Gold's investment significance lies in its impressive ability to store value.

Think about it. Treasures that were buried thousands of years are dug up and are worth even more today, in part because of the amazing craftsmanship and rarity of these artefacts, but partly because they are simply made of gold.

Investors love gold because its value is not eroded by inflation.

It?s also a tangible asset, which means if you own gold you can literally get your hands on it in a way that you can?t with stocks and shares.

That?s a big advantage if you?re worried about the stability of your bank or the financial system.

Property is also tangible, but who can put a house in their pocket in the way you can with gold coins?

The fact is gold is the ultimate defensive investment . When the brown stuff really hits the fan, and societies are crashing, never mind the stock markets, you want your wealth in gold.

As you can see from the chart the price of gold has soared in the 21st century, rising from under 300 dollars an ounce to nearly 1700 dollars today.

It really started to shoot up around the financial crisis in 2007 and 2008.

Although the banking system has stabilised, gold has continued to rise in response to the measures taken by central banks to prevent a depression.

Central banks like the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England have effectively printed hundreds and billions of new dollars and pounds to reflate their economies after the bursting of the credit bubble.

Investors worry these ?quantitative easing? policies are hugely inflationary.

Many believe the Fed and the Bank of England are happy to let inflation rise to reduce the value of their countries? massive debts.

Moreover, the US, UK and Japan seem to be engaged in a war to push down the value of their currencies. This is meant to help their exporters but it could also stoke inflation.

Gold?s appeal as a defence against inflation and as an alternative, purer currency has never been stronger.

So how do you buy gold?

Many professional portfolio managers put as much as 5% to 10% of their investors? money in gold, so it?s an important consideration.

The easiest way for investors to get gold exposure is to buy an exchange traded fund tracking the gold price.

There are also actively managed funds which invest in gold and in gold mining companies.

However, with gold funds you own units or shares in the fund, not the gold itself.

If you actually want to own gold, there are specialist firms that will sell you gold coins and bars. This is the purest way of investing in gold, although the costs of storage are an issue to consider.

The big debate around gold is where it will go next?

Gold?s remarkable gains have slowed of late. It rose modestly last year as confidence returned to stock markets and the eurozone debt crisis subsided.

It?s possible gold will have a similar year in 2013 but after that could rise a lot more if inflation becomes a problem.

SMP at Home: Family Photoshoot from White Loft Studio + Seasonal ...

This particular photoshoot?embodies a number of things we adore here at SMP at Home: a big cozy bed, a loving family, and brand new teeny tiny babies. As the author of New England Markets, Christine has become a bit of a go-to for us in terms of learning about local, delicious produce and all-things-farmers markets. Basically: she has the most darling family and she?s a food-lovers dream; for that we?re thrilled to have her here today. Not only is she sharing a beautifully intimate moment captured by White Loft Studio, she?s also divulging a simple recipe + a printable illustrated seasonal produce guide that we can?t wait to test out ourselves. ?PS ? the rest of the gallery is filled with way more baby goodness!

From Christine? In our family, we place great importance on eating locally. This becomes a bit tricky in the winter months, when fresh produce options are rather slim here in New England. Thankfully, we have a wonderful wintertime farmers market in our town, and thanks to the ingenuity of New England farmers, there are just enough offerings to keep us well fed. Root vegetables are a staple of locally-focused winter diets, and lucky for us, sweet potatoes are an ideal first food for infants. These nutritional superstars, chock full of fiber, potassium, beta-carotene and vitamin C, are creamy, flavorful and easy-to-digest. With a bit of creativity, this multitasking veggie can feed the whole family! I am so busy juggling the needs of a baby and toddler, that I really appreciate healthy meals that can be adapted to feed every member of our family.

Eating with the seasons has a myriad of both health and environmental benefits. But the most compelling reason to adhere to nature?s calendar is that produce simply tastes better when it?s enjoyed at the height of its growing season. We have become so accustomed to seeing every type of produce available year-round at the grocery store, that it can be hard to keep track of what really is in-season. Let this simple, beautifully illustrated guide remind you of the natural seasons for most fruits and vegetables (keep in mind there will be slight variations from region to region, depending on the climate).?Click here to download the guide for yourself. Print it out on full-sized letter paper and keep it on your fridge as a constant reminder!

And in case you?re wondering what to feed your family during the cold winter months, Christine has lovingly prepared a quick and easy recipe that will be sure to satisfy each member in your household!

    ?Sweet Potatoes, Three Ways

    Ingredients-Art

    4 whole sweet potatoes
Liquid for pureeing (breast milk, water, or broth)
Variety of condiments such as black beans, salsa, shredded cheese, hummus, avocado, chickpeas

    Instructions-Art-2

    For Baby:
    1. Preheat oven to 400F.

    2. Wash each sweet potato and, using a fork, poke several holes in the skin.

    3. Place the potato directlyon the oven rack, and bake for 30-60 minutes, until soft.

    4. Once the potato is cooked, slice it end to end, and scoop out the insides.

    5. Using a blender, and liquid of your choice (breast milk, water, or broth), puree until it reaches the consistency that your baby prefers.

    For Toddler:
    1. Bake sweet potato same as above, and when cooked, cut it into bit sized cubes (don?t overcook, you want a bit of firmness so cubes hold their shape).

    2. Serve with a multitude of dipping sauces (hummus, salsa, mashed avocado) for a fun, healthy, interactive lunch or dinner!

    For Mom & Dad:
    1. Bake sweet potato same as above, and when cooked, slice from end to end.

    2. Serve with a host of different toppings, for a make-your-own stuffed potato bar. I like mine with diced avocado, salsa, black beans, and shredded cheese for a Southwest-style treat. I also like crispy shallots, garlicky-sauteed kale and chickpeas for a healthy option. You can also choose to try sweet toppings as opposed to savory- a bit of butter, cinnamon, brown sugar and toasted pecans is divine!
