Author James Salter will read from his work and receive the prestigious PEN/Malamud Award for short fiction at Folger Theatre. Salter was a career officer and a pilot in the Air Force, who became a full-time writer after the success of his 1957 debut novel
The Hunters, based on his combat mission experience in Korea. Along with Salter's acclaimed short stories, his prodigious output also includes screenplays, poetry, essays, a memoir and several more novels, among them
A Sport, A Pastime and
Solo Faces. In choosing him for the award, named after Pulitzer Prize-winner Bernard Malamud (
The Natural), the selection committee noted that Salter's "shown us how to work with fire, flame, the laser, all the forces of life at the service of creating sentences that spark and make stories burn."
